A Method for Evaluating the Number of Massed Nesting Olive Ridley Sea Turtles, Lepidochelys Olivacea, During an Arribazón, With Comments On Arribazón Behaviour
A description of a method to approximate the number of Olive ridley females nesting during a so-called arribazón is given. Arribazón is the Spanish term used to describe the synchronized nesting efforts of both species of ridley sea turtle. A method to fit a curve of the average density of nesting females on a stretch of beach 10 meters wide, against the time, each night an arribazón takes, is presented. The curve is used to calculate the number of ridleys that nested during an arribazón night. Summation of the night-totals gives the total number of nesting females during an arribazón.
