Chapter Summary

The influence that sustainable development has had on international environmental law within a fairly short time span is quite remarkable. From a rather broad and imprecise definition, it has developed into an umbrella term encompassing different components, both substantive and procedural. Sustainable development has slowly but surely influenced international law and policy as no other norm has done in recent years. Despite definitional problems and rather hesitant views about its legal status, it would not be wrong to say that sustainable development "came of age" with the adoption of the Rio Declaration. It has not only influenced states and their activities, it has also influenced the work of international organizations and specialized agencies. Moreover, it has been embraced by NGOs, both national and international. The environmental impact assessment process, which originated from national law, is being increasingly applied in relation to transboundary environmental problems.

Keywords: environmental impact assessment; International Environmental Law; international organizations; Rio Declaration; sustainable development
