Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a list of contemporary treaties and other binding instruments signed for the sustainable development and also provides a firm grasp of international environmental law issues and of international law in general. This book Emerging Principles of International Environmental Law shows that International environmental law (IEL) has come a long way since the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment. It discusses five concepts/principles: sustainable development; the precautionary principle; environmental impact assessment process and procedural rights; the common but differentiated responsibility principle; and the polluter pays principle. The underlying notion for the whole publication is sustainable development, and other principles or concepts discussed in this publication are evaluated in terms of their relationship with sustainable development.

Keywords: binding instruments; environmental law issues; International environmental law (IEL); International Law; sustainable development
