Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book The WTO, Animals and PPMs, which focuses on those trade measures that are designed to protect animals on the basis of environmental concerns or animal welfare concerns. The book addresses a broader range of issues concerning public morals and the environment, and suggests new analytical framework for GATT Article XX - an extensive analysis of product or production methods (PPMs). The chapter gives a brief introduction to the World Trade Organization (WTO), and then explains the development of two theses (on which the book is structured) and their verification.
