This section presents a list of abbreviations occurring in the book Guide to International Environmental Law. The book discusses the relationship between international obligations and national and local law, with particular reference to federal systems. On the national level, the place of international law varies from one legal system to another. In the United States, treaties are listed as part of the supreme law of the land" in Art. VI of the Constitution. This means that they override conflicting laws, including constitutional laws, of the component states in the federal system.
