Chapter Summary

On May 25, 2000, the United Nations adopted two Optional Protocols to the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC) that address some of the most horrific human rights abuses perpetrated against the world's children: trafficking and sexual exploitation of children and the use of children in armed conflict. The Optional Protocol to the Convention on the Rights of the Child on the Sale of Children, Child Prostitution and Child Pornography (Trafficking Protocol) covers the growing problems of trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation of children. It prohibits the sale of children, child prostitution, and child pornography; requires such acts to be covered under a country's criminal or penal law; and provides for protection of children victimized by the prohibited practices. The United States has taken steps to comply with the Optional Protocols and is making progress in addressing some of the worst human rights abuses of children.
