Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a list of contemporary territorial instruments and treaties signed between States and indigenous peoples that provided indigenous peoples with the collective right to live, own and use their traditional territories. In recent decades indigenous peoples have been put under increasing pressure from other actors such as transnational corporations (TNCs) that are increasingly encroaching on indigenous peoples' territories to exploit natural resources. This search for natural resources is one of the primary areas of conflict between indigenous peoples' land rights and other interests.
