Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book Philipp Franz Von Siebold and the Opening of Japan: A Re-Evaluation presents the table of contents and preface. The book draws on new documents, principally the correspondence, written advice and draft treaties, produced by Philipp Franz von Siebold (1796-1866), which in August 2002 were placed in the public domain. Von Siebold arrived in Japan as a fully trained practitioner in Europe's latest medical know-how. He was an expert in internal medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, obstetrics and pharmacology. According to a letter von Siebold sent to his mother, he taught medicine to over fifty Japanese students, all registered as interpreters.
