Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of terms and concepts relevant to the study on Philipp Franz von Siebold. von Siebold was able to write his book Nippon and to play an advisory role in the opening of Japan, precisely because during his two stays in Japan, he studied the entire country and its people. One of the highlights of von Siebold's stay in Japan came early in 1826 when a Dutch delegation was to travel to Edo. Since 1790, the shogunal government had determined that the Dutch opperhoofd proceed to Edo once every four years for a formal shogunal audience.
