Chapter Summary

This chapter discusses the life history of Hirosawa Kenzo. Hirosawa Kenzo by name is a genuine Spirit of life and good cheer in the household. His brightness, his intelligence, and his unfailing good humor always had a very genial and wholesome influence upon every person who was thrown in contact with him. Hirosawa's career is not without interest to those who are curious in the study of Japanese politics; and its tragic termination showed the dangers, that, in the disorganization of affairs which followed the Imperial Restoration of 1868, were apt to attend a rapid elevation to rank and power. His talents and energy made him conspicuous while he was quite young; and, although not originally of very high rank, he speedily rose to the position of principal adviser and first executive officer of his lord.
