Chapter Summary

There can be no doubt that Frederick Cornes was an exceptionally astute businessman who possessed great intelligence and a strong desire to succeed in anything he decided to undertake. While these characteristics were certainly beneficial for success in a commercial career they were not, by themselves, in any way sufficient to guarantee or even suggest the heights that he was eventually to reach. The extent of the estate shows the scale of his own success. He quickly established himself as a talented buyer of silk and rapidly gained an insight into all aspects of the trade. In addition to the growth of the silk trade, the export of tea also expanded rapidly and the partnership shared in this growth. Apart from his flexible approach to changing patterns of trade he used his reputation and personal contacts to obtain agencies and admission into many fresh activities.
