Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a summary of copy books written by Frederick Cornes during the period 1864 and 1867 to 1910. The masterly text of the book The Business, Life and Letters of Frederick Cornes Aspects of the Evolution of Commerce in Modern Japan, 1861-1910 puts Cornes' letters into their context, providing an admirable survey of the expansion of Yokohama as a major port, its infrastructure and the growth of its trade and shipping, together with the role of Cornes and of other expatriate merchant houses. Frederick Cornes followed his early entry into the silk trade in Manchester and Shanghai (where his employers had a branch) into the exporting of silk from Yokohama on his own account where this, together with tea, became the main constituents of Japan's international trade.
