Chapter Summary

Private Letter Books includes many letters to other firms and individuals as well as to his own colleagues during the years from 1864 to 1889. There is relatively little accessible contemporary and primary material about the commercial evolution of the modern Japanese economy and its international connections. Transcribing and interpreting the almost weekly letters of commercial intelligence between London and Yokohama, which extended from before the Meiji Restoration in 1868 to the eve of the First World War, was a mammoth task. But they provide a unique source for our knowledge of trade with Japan in the formative period of its development.
