Chapter Summary

This appendix of the book The Business, Life and Letters of Frederick Cornes Aspects of the Evolution of Commerce in Modern Japan, 1861-1910 contains Cornes links with the Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (P&p;O). Aspinall, Cornes and Company, established in Yokohama in 1861, has survived as Cornes and Company until the present. F. Cornes and W. Aspinall amalgamated to form this company but all the early records of their activities have been lost. P&p;O, the first British shipping firm to establish a regular line of steamers to Japan, began its operation in the summer of 1859, when their little 'barque rigged, iron hull vessel, sail and steam of 80 horsepower' called the Chusan, after active service in the East since 1852, was put on the Shanghai-Japan run.
