Chapter Summary

This chapter presents President Sukarno's Opening Speech during Afro-Asian conference at Bandung. On the eighteenth day of April, one thousand seven hundred and seventy five, just one hundred and eighty years ago, Paul Revere rode at midnight through the New England countryside, warning of the approach of British troops and of the opening of the American War of Independence, the first successful anti-colonial war in history. The States of the world today depend one upon the other and no nation can be an island unto itself. Sukarno addresses that we can mobilize all the spiritual, moral, all the political strength of Asia and Africa on the side of peace. The five prime ministers consulted together, discussed the issues, pooled their ideas, added together their individual political skills and came forward with sound and reasoned suggestions which formed the basis for a settlement of long struggle in Indo-China.
