Chapter Summary

Japan's economic relationship with China in the modern sense dates back to 1871 when the first Sino-Japanese Treaty of Commerce was concluded. An analysis of Japan's investments in China shows that the subject naturally divides itself into three distinct groups: business investments or direct capital investments, loans to or Japanese financing of the Central Government of China, local governments, or individual corporations and other indirect investments, and cultural investments. Japan's total investments in China assume an immense sum of over two and a half billion yen, without including bank loans and Japanese Government properties in China. Diverse Japanese commercial and industrial enterprises are distributed all over China, and their fate rises or falls with the political and economic stability of the country. China is today, moreover, one of Japan's best markets for her manufactured goods and absorbs far more than one-fourth of her export trade.
