Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of the book English-Language Press Networks of East Asia, 1918-1945 which argues that the English-language press of East Asia played a significant role in the shaping of international perceptions of Japan and East Asia and that this role can only be fully understood if it is realized that there existed within the East Asian media world three informal networks of the English-language press and that a similar editorial line was generally taken by those newspapers, magazines and news agencies that belonged to each network. A central concern is the role played by the English-language newspapers of East Asia in shaping perceptions of Japan and East Asia, primarily at the official level, but also in the fourth estate and among opinion leaders and ordinary citizens in the US and Britain, as well as among Anglophone settlers in East Asia during the period under study.
