Chapter Summary

This index section presents a list of author names (or terms) that occur in the book titled Victorian Women Travellers in Meiji Japan. The book examines the narratives of women writers who travelled to Japan from the mid-1850s onwards, when Japan was first opened to the West, and became a highly desirable travel destination for decades thereafter. In the middle of the nineteenth century, two major developments gave further impetus to ladies contemplating travelling abroad, the rapid development in transport which opened up possibilities for travel not known before and, in the case of Japan, the opening up of that country to the West.
