Chapter Summary

The Doll's festival takes place in March and the author thought of inviting her parents and her husband to the Doll's festival the following week. Her mother was unwell and she thought of visiting her to talk about the Doll's festival. Her mother felt sick and fell down after vomiting. She rushed to hospital in Nakano where her mother was admitted along with her daughter and her husband. The doctor diagnosed her mother's condition as acute myocardial infaction. She had died almost instantly, although the ambulance men's life-saving action brought her mother back to life for a while. The doctor required an autopsy because of her sudden death. All relatives and persons were notified about her mother's death using address book and New Year cards. The following spring was the first one in which no dolls were displayed at the Girl's festival.
