The author was greeted by the flavour of soy sauce mixed with sweet rice wine wafting in the hall when she arrived home and opened the front door. She saw her husband in the kitchen wearing an apron, struggling with a frying pan in one hand. She was chatting with her friends once when the topic of getting along with her husband after his retirement came up. They all wanted their husbands to cook. This was a wish they all shared. Her husband started to work in the kitchen eight years after retirement, although the occasions were still few and far between. He began to show interest in recipes other than the ones he learned in his cooking class. He bought a book, Easy Recipes for the Microwave Oven, and he enjoyed trying those recipes as if they were some kind of experiment.
