Chapter Summary

The author went out for a walk in the warm winter sunlight early in the afternoon. She usually walked as far as a small park at the end of her residential street. She had had two operations on her leg, and she was then able to walk again. She walked slowly with a stick in her hand. The park boasted a solitary old bench. She could not walk about freely without the help of a stick, but she felt somewhat relieved by the sky, which accepted everyone equally. Her house was situated in a quiet town on the outskirts of Tokyo, and it was the last house in her life. The author could not foretell the future, and that was how life went along. She indulged in idle speculation and saw everything around her tinged faintly pink showing signs of a warm spring.
