Chapter Summary

The front matter section of this book The Jehol Diary Yŏrha ilgi of Pak Chiwŏn (1737-1805) contains a table of contents, acknowledgements, abbreviations, a conversion table for units and an introduction by Yang Hi Choe-Wall. The Jehol Diary is Pak Chiwŏn's (1737-1805) account of his journey to Jehol, the imperial summer residence during the Qing dynasty in China. The Diary describes many aspects of China's superior material culture in those villages, towns and cities the author visited en route to Jehol, and compared them to the backwardness of Korean methodology and economic institutions. Pak resigned from the government post in 1801 and the following year returned to Yŏnam, where he had once escaped with his life during a purge of the literati.
