The author describes the circumstances of the Catholic missionary and then considers what made him distinct from other missionaries belonging to non-Catholic Christian denominations. The chapter examines the particular case of missionary education within the French Société des Missions Étrangères de Paris, the institutional home of our religious ethnographers.
