Chapter Summary

This chapter presents several Articles of the General Agreement on Tariffs and Trade (GATT) 1994. The Articles cover issues such as national treatment on internal taxation and regulation, elimination of quantitative restrictions, protection of public morals, protection of human, animal or plant life or health, and importations or exportations of gold or silver. Given that tariffs are by no means the only restrictions on international trade, non-tariff barriers to trade are important objects of regulation of World Trade Organization (WTO) law. The book covers some of the most relevant non-tariff barriers, that is, technical barriers to trade and sanitary and phytosanitary measures. Technical standards are increasingly determining the development, production, trade in and marketing of goods and services. They thus have a considerable impact on international trade.

Keywords: GATT; international trade; quantitative restrictions; World Trade Organization (WTO) law
