Chapter Summary

This chapter of the book State Support for Religious Education discusses the public funding of private schools in Canada, and federation of independent schools in Canada. Supporters of private education believe that private schools offer greater diversity in educational programs and give parents the flexibility to choose the curriculum appropriate for their child. The increasing number of students enrolled in private schools across Canada shows that many parents find that they are a credible alternative to public education. The Federation of Independent Schools in Canada represents a microcosm of Canada in all its diversity. Each member association represents unique characteristics based on educational expressions of belief and practice and on differences in provincial education law and policy. The Federation respects and encourages this diversity and represents the whole range of independent education.
