Chapter Summary

This inventory of Yiddish books is a survey of publications printed in the Netherlands from 1644 until the decade following the Second World War, when Yiddish printing practically ceased. Amsterdam was a thriving centre of Yiddish printing from the mid-seventeenth century until the mid-nineteenth century. The publications produced in Amsterdam covered a wide range of subjects, from narrative prose, plays, and humorous literature, to textbooks, grammars, religious literature, and regulations of local Ashkenazic Jewish communities. As a first step towards a comprehensive bibliography of Yiddish texts printed in the Netherlands, this inventory is based on information extracted from secondary literature and is therefore subject to the limitations of these sources.
