Chapter Summary

This chapter is based on two case studies that the author has done in preparing a book on the prospects of effective international verification for the elimination of weapons of mass destruction to demonstrate the urgent need to reverse current tendencies towards nuclear-weapons proliferation. The most pressing cases of nuclear proliferation today are Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea) and Iran. The chapter examines the similarities and differences between the two cases, their strategic and political objectives, the nature of their nuclear programs, and the effectiveness of international safeguards. A constructive approach is also suggested to halt the dangerous proliferation trend and to deter further erosion of the nuclear non-proliferation regime.

Keywords: democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK); international safeguards; Iran; nuclear-weapons proliferation
