Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of ancient sources that are mentioned in the book Making History Josephus and Historical Method. Some of the ancient sources include Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Qumran documents, Old Testament Pseudepigrapha and other Rabbinic works. The book addresses the problem of using Josephus as a source for historical reconstruction, given the ways in which his literary and rhetorical concerns shape his narrative. Josephus employs the theme and language of noble death numerous times, and these texts have become important for identity constructions: Masada is a symbol for modern Israelis, and an understanding of Judaism as a religion characterised by martyrdom became an essential part of the Christian praeparatio evangelica.

Keywords: Hebrew Bible; Josephus; Qumran documents
