Chapter Summary

This chapter explores the following questions regarding health care in Senegal. How might such a premise be explained? Do Sandoval’s concerns are political economic concerns. These questions reflect two fundamental elements of political economic analysis: a) the way in which resources are controlled and distributed; and b) human interaction which is both the catalyst and the consequence of that control and distribution. Explaining “health care in Senegal” is not a straightforward proposition. There is no comprehensive work on the numerous health care institutions and structures. This is a fundamental limitation to an examination of the political economy of health care in Senegal. Using political economy and following the dynamics of the economic system leads to the transformation of existing social structures and emergence of new social structures. The interdisciplinary and integrative nature of political economy provides the basis for the necessary methodological framework and the tools that make analysis feasible.
