Chapter Summary

The 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (LOS Convention) promotes, in many of its provisions, international and regional cooperation in order to deal with the various and complicated issues it addresses, including lack of co-ordination between States. The LOS provisions on enclosed and semi-closed seas are based upon an extended network of regional cooperation in three areas, namely: marine scientific research, fisheries and protection of the marine environment. International cooperation in the LOS Convention is advanced primarily through policies adopted in the field of marine scientific research and the transfer of marine technology by developed to developing States. International cooperation is promoted through the LOS provisions on development and transfer of marine technology. Finally the chapter discusses the protection of the marine environment becomes a basic element of the sustainable development process.
