Chapter Summary

This chapter presents a sub-collection of letters of Gregory of Nyssa. The sub-collection is named after Georgio Pasquali who added notably to Zaccagni's collection in his magisterial edition of 30 letters published in 1925. The letters include Letter 1 To Bishop Flavian, Letter 2 To Kensitor on pilgrimages, Letter 4 To Eusebius, Letter 6 To Bishop Ablabius, Letter 7 To Hierius the governor, Letter 8 To Antiochanus, Letter 9 To Stagirius, and many others. Flavian's election was a vote for continuing the Antiochian schism, a sorry standoff between parties of orthodox faith: old Nicenes and Neo-nicenes. It is important to note that the dim view of pilgrimages Gregory expresses is not unique among the Church Fathers. What was supposed to be a means of fostering devotion was quite capable of becoming a hindrance to it instead.
