Chapter Summary

This introduction tries to argue why the authors consider Volume II to be more than a mere appendix to Volume I. Furthermore, it will comment on the composition of the bibliography and will introduce some of its main features and tools. The book also focuses on constructing a theory of ritual which is a comparatively simple task. However, the authors aim with the present volume is not to engage in a theoretical discussion of past theories, but, more modestly, to outline the theoretical arguments of a vast number of theoreticians as a means of laying the ground for future theoretical debates. In the course of the book the authors decided to adopt two main criteria for the selection of titles to be included in our bibliography: Given our focus on ritual theory (a) the book should principally be theoretical in orientation, and (b) it should be primarily focused on rituals.

Keywords: application strategy; deviance strategy; prototype strategy; ritual theories; Ronald Grimes
