Chapter Summary

The changes in the capitalist world system during the last two decades of the Twentieth Century not only transformed the post-WW II international order but also fuelled a process of systemic restructuration, giving rise to what today is referred to as globalisation. At the global level, the triumph of neoliberalism coincided with the dismantling of the model of socialism that had existed in Eastern Europe and the Soviet Union. Bolivarian alternative for the Americas (ALBA) is the first project of Latin American integration that is based in regional solidarity and cooperation rather than trade and profits. ALBA is a reality in progress that can be seen unfolding in Latin America through the concretization of various agreements and initiatives. The goal of this chapter is to help arm ourselves with the elements necessary for a better understanding of a continent that is reaching the boiling point.

Keywords: Bolivarian alternative for the Americas (ALBA); capitalist world system; free trade of the Americas (FTAA); imperialism; Latin America; movement towards socialism (MAS); neoliberalism
