Chapter Summary

This chapter briefly discusses some issues of human rights addressed by the Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, in particular those arising in connection with certain questions of international law. "In Christ the Lord, the Church indicates and strives to be the first to embark upon the path of the human person". In the Encyclical Pacem inTerris Pope John XXIII inaugurated a long series of contemporaneous papal pronouncements on human rights". In his teachings, John Paul II, not only indefatigably spoke up for human rights and strove for their implementation but also promoted them particularly systematically. In this respect, the Church's efforts were and remain especially important as humanity and the Church continue to be aware of the fact that on the international and internal planes "[t]he solemn proclamation of human rights is contradicted by a painful reality of violations".
