Chapter Summary

This chapter reviews what some of the key intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) do in relation to trafficking of human beings by providing a comparative analysis of their efforts and an analysis of the extent to which they are successful in the suppression of the phenomenon and the promotion of a human rights framework. It starts with an examination of the policies and programmes of one key regional organisation, the European Union (EU). The study of the EU is followed by that of the United Nations Inter-Agency Project on Trafficking of Women and Children in Mekong Sub-region (UNIAP), a project being implemented under the auspices of the United Nations. In addition, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) and the International Labour Organisation (ILO) are also explored as both of these organisations have been the key players in the fight against trafficking of human beings.

Keywords: European Union (EU); human beings; human rights; intergovernmental organizations (IGOs); International Labour Organisation (ILO); International Organisation for Migration (IOM); trafficking; UNIAP
