The name of Joseph Lebdi, the central _gure of this chapter, appears in our documents in at least ten different forms and combinations. A journey to India by Joseph Lebdi, which must have taken place approximately in 1094/5-97 is profusely reported in the Geniza. Mahruz b. Jacob, a shipowner and Indian Ocean merchant, figures frequently in the documents of this book. The distinguished Ibn al-Amshati_ family was known both for its contacts with the India trade and for its contacts with Maimonides and his family. Geniza writings consisting of documents and literary works; synagogue inscriptions and other literary sources, including probable references by Arab historians and the epistle of Maimonides.
