Chapter Summary

This is the introductory chapter of part 4 of this book The demographic challenge : a handbook about Japan. The part focuses on political aspects of Japan's demographic change. It takes a two-sided approach of studying, on the one hand, the multiple policy making actors and the interdependence between them, and, on the other hand, the contents of actual policy outcomes. It provides insights into how state institutions and civil society organizations address the multifaceted challenges current population development pose to Japan's political system in general and exemplified policy areas in particular.
