Chapter Summary

In recent years the economic implications of population ageing have received increasing attention among researchers, policy makers and the general public. This is the introductory chapter of part 5 of the book. The chapters in the part cover a variety of economic issues, such as business and management aspects, which are not directly related to the social security debate of demographic change in Japan. They address both the economics of the aged, in other words, the present economic status of the elderly, and the economics of ageing-the economic changes that result from population ageing.

Keywords: demographic change; economic policy; Japan; population ageing; social security
