Chapter Summary

The majority of the questiones and sophismata have not survived, as it was only rarely that scholastic and masters' disputations left the rails of commonplace routine. Sedlák's discovery of two polemics against Jerome seems to introduce the necessary order into the conflicting testimony. The study of medieval literary survivals constantly brings new proof of the unoriginality not only of particular works by well-known authors, but also of the field of literary and scholastic creation. The mystery remains as to whether Jerome merely worked up the earlier triangular scheme of St Augustine, or whether he was himself the creator of the archetype of the triangular shield. University questiones and polemics account for the greater part of the surviving literary heritage of Master Jerome of Prague.
