Chapter Summary

This chapter talks about the Model Recommended Legislation of the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS). It reviews articles on securities markets. The development of the regulation of securities markets in the member CIS has been both by general economic factors characteristic of the majority of countries with transition economies and by specific factors characteristic of securities markets around the world. The Model Legislative Provisions on Investor Protection (MLPIP) were intended to deal with some regulatory issues in a way that was suitable for CIS countries in general. In particular, the model contained provisions regarding bondholders, professional standards for market participants, and on compensation schemes. The purpose was not to provide for state-of-the-art regulation but to establish basic legislative concepts and thus create a common foundation.
