Chapter Summary

This section presents a list of glossaries relevant to analysis of archaeological excavations conducted at Sonkh. Numerous works of literature and texts belonging to various sects describe events of consequence in Mathura prior to the Maurya period. However, none of these sources can be dated with certainty to earlier than the first or second centuries CE, by which time Mathura had already become well established as a major religious and commercial center. It was in the subsequent century, between ca. 150 and 100 BCE, that Mathura emerged as a cultural and urban center, one of the most influential metropolitan centers of the ancient Indian subcontinent.
