Chapter Summary

The author thinks that every practitioner in the field of Qumran studies has written and delivered his or her own "Fifty Years of Research on the Dead Sea Scrolls" lecture during the past year. This chapter offers some thoughts, which reflect the impressions the author formed after a whole year of celebrations of this fiftieth anniversary. These thoughts can be summarized in two propositions and a consequence: 1. Qumran studies have reached maturity as an independent academic discipline within the general field of Jewish Studies; 2. Qumran studies continue to impassion a large segment of the public outside the academia; 3. Qumran studies are one of the main factors that have contributed to the flourishing of the general field of Jewish Studies in the second part of the twentieth century.
