Chapter Summary

This index presents a list of modern authors relevant to the discussion of the wisdom-apocalyptic relationship in ancient Judaism and early Christianity. The author considers four texts representing Jewish and Christian thought. In the former category, the author considers some of the books in 1 Enoch and the wisdom text 4QInstruction. In the latter, he considers the Gospel of Matthew and 2 Enoch. While the study of each individual text should be the primary basis for our understanding of its eschatology, some notes of caution from Rowland deserve to be noted. These concern the assumption that there is, in apocalyptic texts, an underlying dichotomy between the present time and the time to come. This assumption is probably best demonstrated by the influential words of Rowley.

Keywords: 1 Enoch; 2 Enoch; 4QInstruction; Christian eschatology; Jewish eschatology; Matthew's Gospel; Second Temple Judaism
