Chapter Summary

This appendix "A Textual Analysis of Pŏpjang Hwasang Chŏn" has two purposes. One is to provide a critical, punctuated edition of Chʾoe Chʾiwŏn’s Pŏpjang hwasang chŏn and the other, to identify the Buddhist sources of which Chʾoe Chʾiwŏn availed himself in composing his biography. In order to illustrate the extent to which Chʾoe Chʾiwŏn was based on these sources and the ways he has made use of them, the relevant passages and their corresponding sources will be presented side by side in the main body of this appendix. The appendix further highlights some more delicate textual problems in the footnotes, by reference to Dōchū, who wrote the only known commentary on Pŏpjang hwasang chŏn.

Keywords: Chʾoe Chʾiwŏn; Fazang; Pŏpjang hwasang chŏn; textual analysis
