Chapter Summary

This chapter provides a survey of the extant Yiddish sources relating to the Jewish communities of the Netherlands in Dutch archives. With the launch of the Menasseh ben Israel Institute's major research project on the cultural history of Ashkenazi Jewry in the Netherlands, the need for an inventory of Yiddish sources became paramount. Discussions regarding the preservation of archives of Jewish communities began in the 1920s, and the arguments continue to reverberate. The Jewish communities referred to in the present inventory are the various Ashkenazi communities in the Netherlands. The documents of Jewish communities kept in the state archive at The Hague are supra-communal.
