Chapter Summary

This section of the book Montaigne and the Low Countries (1580-1700) contains a list of illustrations, which includes Dutch translation of "De la modération" by Jan Van Hout, dated 31 May 1585, Montaigne, Essais and Page from Erasmus, Encomium Moriae. The book contributes to a topic which deserves far more attention in the field of Early Modern Studies than it has received so far: the reception of literature and philosophy. The literary culture of the early modern period offers intriguing insights in the puzzling role of early modern readers and users of texts which is, as has recently been demonstrated, much more independent and creative than one would expect from the point of view of the 21st century.
