Chapter Summary

Focussing on the Barents and Kara Seas, this chapter examines both nuclear transport and nuclear dumping and the possible implications of these activities for biodiversity in the region. Nuclear dumping, although prohibited internationally, is included because of the past dumping in the region, the current lack of adequate storage space in Russia for solid nuclear waste and nuclear spent fuel and the possibility, however small, that dumping could resume. The chapter discusses the nuclear waste management policies in Finland, bordering both Russia and the Baltic Sea. The eco-region is one of the most productive seas globally, as well as one of the most biologically diverse Arctic regions. The warm ocean currents run farthest north here, and many species live on the limits of their distributional ranges. It represents one of Europe's last large, clean and relatively undisturbed marine eco-systems.

Keywords: arctic regions; Barents; Kara Seas; marine eco-systems; nuclear dumping
