In this Chapter, the author focuses on the opportunities that exist for making substantive advances in basic knowledge about the outstanding scientific and technological issues related to sub-seabed disposal (SSD), as well as a range of oceanographic and ocean engineering questions that would directly impact the viability of high level radioactive waste (HLRW) SSD. The author considers the case for HLRW SSD and not the myriad of issues related to seabed dumping of other types of waste, radioactive and not, this will be referred to throughout the chapter as SSD. For the past thirty years, the exploration and study of sea floor terrain throughout the world's oceans using ship-based survey systems and deep submergence platforms has resulted in unraveling plate boundary processes within the paradigm of sea floor spreading. This research has revolutionized the Earth and oceanographic sciences.
