Chapter Summary

This front matter section of the book French Vernacular Books, H-Z: Books published in the French Language before 1601 contains the table of contents, and a list of library codes for the books in an alphabetical order. The strength of the rare book collections in town libraries is a peculiarity of French book culture, and probably unique in the world of library science. It dates from the French Revolution, when by decree of the revolutionary authorities the massive collections of the French religious houses were confiscated to the use of the state. As a result, many thousands of rare books were physically transferred to the keeping of the civic authorities: many are still housed on the shelves built to accommodate them at that time.

Keywords: French revolution; French vernacular books; library science
