The Islamic Revolution of Iran, which gathered momentum as from late 1978, resulted in the overthrow of the Shah's regime and in its replacement by a provisional government, in February 1979. The pre-Revolution turmoil and the discomforts it brought about, together with crippling strikes in public and banking services, led to the exodus from Iran of many thousands of Iranians and expatriates.
